A few minutes ago, a friend called asking if I had heard of the ruling regarding same sex persons. I had not.
She told how some hours ago a federal judge ruled it unconstitutional to deny any persons marriage status!
I have been shedding tears ever since. Why? For joy, because I have been waiting for more people (and the government to acknowledge that all people deserve rights under our constitution. I am pleased that Indiana is finally there.
I am pleased that LOVE wins. We so need love. It is so important to allow love and thankfully, our government can stand on the side of love and I hope that all people will stand there as well.
Why? Because there are people I LOVE who have been denied their due rights and now, they have legal backing (which I think belonged there all along). In this nation that runs around the planet seeking to protect rights. It is good, very good to see them protecting the hearts and the rights of the people here in the US!

Spring! - HEALING Crane Newsletter
Hello,
Thanks for stopping in.
Well,
Spring is really hear! Every morning I wake to the sounds of birds
beginning their morning routines in the still dark time. A few nights
ago, I heard my first whipper wheal of the year. Ponds are full from
recent rains and frog eggs are floating everywhere! Flowers cover or fall
from nearly every tree I see. Farmer's Markets are up and running and
people are out walking about.
New
opportunities abound, and I must constantly choose to pause and consider my
work. Due to so many wonderful opportunities there are delays on updating
the website. I continue to receive offers to purchase, and have decided,
when the offer is reasonable, chances are, it will be accepted.

Keystone XL - Stop the Pipeline
Friends,
Right now we are in the middle of the last public comment period for Keystone XL -- one of the very last steps before President Obama makes his decision on the pipeline, and the final opportunity to give your input (in an official way).
This is one of those things where numbers really count, and a flood of comments would show the President that there’s a huge risk, politically and scientifically, to approving the pipeline.
The last time the State Department was accepting comments, we submitted over 1 million as a movement. I think we can top that this time around -- click here to submit your comment against the pipeline: act.350.org/letter/kxl-feis/
Here are the three major messages we need to be getting across to President Obama right now:
First, he has all the evidence he needs to stop the pipeline. It’s simple: building an 830,000 barrel-per-day pipeline of the world’s dirtiest oil will have an impact on the climate. No amount of spin can change the underlying economic reality that Keystone XL will allow big oil to dig up, refine and burn more tar sands than they could with any other available options.
We take the President at his word when he said that he would reject the pipeline if it has a significant impact on the climate, and now the evidence is in: it does.
Second, any effort to build the pipeline would be deeply compromised by big oil’s corruption of the process. ERM, one of the main contractors behind the State Department’s report, is a dues paying member of the American Petroleum Institute, big oil’s main lobbying group, and counts TransCanada as one of their clients. This is like the fox guarding the henhouse, only it’s our climate that needs defending.
Third, we can either have Keystone XL, or a safe and livable climate -- ‘all of the above’ is not an option. We are past the point of building fossil fuel infrastructure and hoping for the best -- Keystone XL isn’t compatible with even the President’s weak climate goals. After 6 years of supporting more fossil fuel projects while saying he’s committed to climate science, President Obama needs to finally decide if he wants to be a climate champion, or be remembered as the pipeline president.
This is the last chance to formally comment on the pipeline before it goes to the President’s desk for a decision. We’ll keep making ourselves heard in many other ways too -- but I think sending a strong message in this forum is critical to showing the President that the science is serious, and that we’re serious too.
Here’s where to go to submit: act.350.org/letter/kxl-feis/
Let’s send this message loud and clear,
May

Depak Chopras Commence Speech at Hartwick College 2013
Greetings All,
May you enjoy this and be well in mind, body and spirit.
Deepak's commencement address to: President Margaret Drugovich, Trustees of Hartwick College, Guests, Parents and Students of the 2013 Graduating Class at Hartwick College
Today, as you celebrate this major milestone in your life and commence a new stage of your life journey, I ask you to reflect on the gift of life itself. And life, in essence, is nothing but awareness. Furthermore, human life, considered the pinnacle of biological evolution, is not just awareness, but self-awareness. Amongst creatures on this planet, we human beings are not only aware; we have the capacity to be aware that we are aware, to be conscious of our consciousness. In that self-awareness lies our potential and power to direct our own future evolution and the future evolution of civilization.
Biological evolution has been summed up in the phrase of "survival of the fittest," but with overpopulation and overconsumption of resources, the future belongs to "survival of the wisest." It is imperative for the future of humanity that wisdom becomes the new criterion for sustainable life on this planet. And wisdom is that knowledge that nurtures life in all its dimensions - not only for us, but also for the generations that follow us.
Today's age is frequently referred to as the Information Age. The hallmarks of this age are the gifts of science and technology that have created the miracles of molecular medicine, real-time imaging of cellular function, instant accessibility of global knowledge, and social networks. Yet despite this emerging global brain, paradoxically we are beset with the same scourges of war and terrorism, radical poverty in 50% of the world's population, irreversible climate change, along with deepening social and economic injustice! Furthermore, humanity suffers from massive malnutrition in which half the world suffers from hunger and the other half from obesity, leading to inflammatory disorders, increasing the risk of chronic illnesses including many types of cancer and cardiovascular diseases while the hungry die from compromised immune function and infectious diseases. The information revolution has not led to the wisdom needed to solve our world crisis in health and well-being.
If ever humanity had the power of mass self-extinction on planet earth, it is today. And if it happens, it will be because we allowed our emotional and spiritual evolution to be outpaced by the evolution of our science and technology. Nuclear proliferation, biological warfare, eco-destruction, the extinction of species and the poisoning of our atmosphere, our rivers and waters and the very food that sustains our life and all life loom before us as imminent threats. But just as in other critical phases of transformation, while there is disaster looming on one hand, there is on the other hand the potential to create a radical reorganization into something much greater than was conceived of before.
Today, I ask you my young friends, you who are the future hope of humanity, you who are the future leaders of the world; today, I ask you what Mahatma Gandhi once asked, "Can you be the change you want to see in the world?"
In fact, there can be no social or world transformation unless there is your own inner transformation. Today, I ask you to face a fundamental truth. Today, I ask you to consider that there is no "you" that is separate from the world. The gift of life, your own self-consciousness, is your key to inner transformation and wisdom, and that in turn is how you will transform the world. Today, I ask you to acknowledge that you are the world and that your transformation of consciousness will be the future of the world. This self-transformation is the wisdom for our planet's survival.
As I enter the autumn of my life and you the springtime of yours, I want to leave you with seven skills in self-awareness that I have learned and that I hope will serve you well no matter what profession you choose, or where your life and destiny take you as a future leader of humanity.
Skill # 1: Become the best listener you can be. Learn to listen with the instruments of the body, the feelings of the heart, the logic of the mind and the stillness of your soul. As you listen deeply, reflect on the following questions: What am I observing? What am I feeling? What is the need of the moment? What is the best way to fulfill this need?
Skill # 2: Bond emotionally with friends, family, professional colleagues and those you interact with daily. Understand that each of us is part of a web of relationships that is nurtured through love, kindness, compassion, empathy and joy. Emotional bonds create effective teamwork where nothing is impossible because you have a shared vision for service, contribution and success and because you complement each other's talents and strengths.
Skill # 3: Expand your awareness by knowing that all human beings have a hierarchy of needs that start with survival and safety and progressively expand through stages that include love and belonging, true self esteem, success as in the progressive realization of worthy goals, creative expression, higher consciousness and self-actualization. As you expand your awareness, learn to harness your spiritual gifts that come in the form of the powers of intention, intuition, creativity, imagination & conscious choice making.
Skill # 4: Remember the importance of action. Learn to be action oriented and know that there is no power higher than love in action. Remember that love without action is meaningless and action without love is irrelevant.
Skill # 5: Assume responsibility for your own well being in all its various facets. Your well being encompasses every aspect of your life - your career, your social interactions, your personal relationships, your community and your financial success. Take time to rest and play, to be with your family and friends, to exercise and nourish your body with healthy food.
Skill # 6: Empower yourself with true self-esteem. Learn to be independent of the good and bad opinion of others. Recognize the power of presence. Do not allow yourself to be distracted. Know your life purpose and the contribution you want to make to society.
Skill # 7: Know your true self. Your true self is not your self-image that is dependent on the labels you and others have given yourself. Your true self is the innermost core of your being that is beyond all labels, definitions and limitations. All the wisdom traditions tell us that the human spirit is a field of infinite possibilities, a field of infinite creativity, love, compassion, joy and profound equanimity. Know you can only give to the world that which you possess in that innermost core of your being. Remember that you will create peace only when you are peaceful and create a loving world only when you have learned to love.
I entreat you to not lose your idealism with the passage of years. That idealism is connected to your knowingness of the good that can be created and the power to manifest it. In you lies the potential for a more peaceful, just, sustainable, healthier and happier world. Remember that the goal of all other goals is to be happy. I am reminded today of an assignment that John Lennon was given by his elementary school teacher when he was seven years old. He and his classmates were asked to write a short description of who they wanted to be when they grew up. John Lennon wrote down that he wanted to be "always happy." When his teacher complained that John did not understand the assignment, John's mother told him to tell the teacher that he did not understand life.
But what do we really know about happiness? Recently there has been a lot of research on the dynamics of happiness. Most people think that if they are successful in achieving their goals or have good relationships or if they are healthy, they will be happy. In fact it is the other way around. If you are a happy person you are likely to have healthy habits, and nurturing relationships and great success in life. Social scientists describe what they describe as the Happiness formula: H=S+C+V
H stands for happiness
S stands for set point in the brain
C stands for conditions of living
V stands for voluntary choices
"S" stands for the set point in the brain and refers to our mechanisms of perception. We all have a semi-fixed place on the happiness spectrum based on our outlook on life. Happier people see the opportunities, whereas unhappy people see problems. The set point for happiness can be upregulated, or shifted toward greater happiness, through self-reflection on limiting beliefs. The set point determines 50% of our happiness experience on a daily basis. The ‘C' in the formula is for conditions of living and refers mainly to material success and personal wealth. It determines about 12% of your daily happiness experience. If you win the lottery, you will be extremely happy for a few months, but after one year, you will return to your set point. Voluntary choices represent choices that we make on a daily basis. Choices for personal pleasure bring transient happiness, while selfless choices bring inner fulfillment through purpose and meaning, e.g. by making other people happy, meaningful relationships bring more permanent happiness. So to be happy, it's fine to have material comforts around you, but that will only account for 12% of your happiness. To really be happy you need to expand awareness and overcome your self-limiting beliefs and then choose selfless actions, or ways to be of service to others. This leads to true and lasting happiness and wisdom.
Finally today, more than any other day, remember to be grateful. Gratitude opens the door to abundant consciousness. Express your gratitude today particularly to your parents, teachers and fellow students, all who have helped bring you to this threshold of life.
You are now ready to embark on the hero's journey, the hero's quest. Good luck and God speed.

Herbal Remedies Banned in EU, Herbal Medicines Licensed, Some Banned
Well, you may already have heard the unfortunate news about changes concerning the the use of Traditional Medicinals as referenced in the two articles which follow.
In the early '90's I wrote a poem about the CODEX meetings in Europe with some folks from the US who were and had been working for decades to create seed and plant laws around the thriving herbal health business and global food business.
I think it unfortunate that Monsanto has been able to continue to spread Genetically modified organisms through our food system and are allowed the continued associated degradation to the soil from toxic chemical compounds and use of all substances that have only a job of killing.
In the 1980's I read a report stating that of all the food varieties cataloged by the USDA at the turn of the century, at the time of that writing, less than 3% remained, and of that seed stock left, more than 85% were in tomato seed.
These numbers still shock me when as I think of the thousands of generations and lives that were responsible for providing us with so much that we could ever take it for granted and let the safe food and herbal medicinals fall away from us by the seemingly intentional destruction and undermining of essential sustainable resources.
The Government allowed access to some unlicensed manufactured herbal
medicines via a statutory register
Patients have lost access to hundreds of herbal medicines today, after European regulations came into force.
Sales of all herbal remedies, except for a small number of popular products for 'mild' illness such as echinacea for colds and St John's Wort for depression have been banned.
For the first time traditional products must be licensed or prescribed by a registered herbal practitioner.
Both herbal remedy practitioners and manufacturers fear they could be forced out of business as a result.
Some of the most commonly used products were saved after the Health Secretary Andrew Lansley approved a plan for the Health Professions Council to establish a register of practitioners supplying unlicensed herbal medicines.
However, many remedies were lost as it was only open to those who could afford the licensing process which costs between £80,000 to £120,000.
At least 50 herbs, including horny goat weed (so-called natural Viagra), hawthorn berry, used for angina pain, and wild yam will no longer be stocked in health food shops, says the British Herbal Medicine Association.
The 2004 EU directive demands that a traditional herbal medicinal product must be shown to have been in use for 30 years in the EU – or at 15 years in the EU and 15 years elsewhere – for it to be licensed.
The UK drug safety watchdog, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Agency, has issued more than a dozen alerts in the past two years, including a warning last month over a contaminated weight loss pill called Herbal Flos Lonicerae (Herbal Xenicol) due to concerns over possible side-effects.
Mr Lansley, in a written statement, said the Government wanted to ensure continuing access to unlicensed herbal medicines via a statutory register for practitioners ‘to meet individual patient needs’.
Acupuncture falls outside the EU directive and so remains unaffected.
Prince Charles, a long-standing supporter of complementary therapies, has voiced his support for formal regulation of herbal practitioners.
Up til now the industry has been covered by the 1968 Medicines Act. This was drawn up when only a small number of herbal remedies were available.
But recent studies show that at least six million Britons have used a herbal medicine in the past two years.
Professor George Lewith, professor of health research at Southampton University, said: ‘Evidence for the efficacy of herbal medicines is growing; they may offer cheap, safe and effective approaches for many common complaints.’

Herbal remedies banned as new EU rules take
effect
Manufacturers and herbal practitioners say strict guidelines aimed at improving safety could force them out of business
Robin McKie
The Observer, Sunday 1 May 2011
New EU rules came into force at the weekend banning hundreds of herbal remedies. The laws are aimed at protecting consumers from potentially damaging "traditional" medicines.
Under the directive, herbal medicines will now have to be registered. Products must meet safety, quality and manufacturing standards, and come with information outlining possible side-effects.
Herbal practitioners and manufacturers say they fear the new rules could force them out of business.
Research conducted for the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in 2009 showed that 26% of adults in the UK had taken a herbal medicine in the last two years, mostly bought over the counter in health food shops and pharmacies. Commonly used ingredients already registered include echinacea, which is used against colds, St John's wort, used for depression and anxiety, and valerian, which is claimed to ease insomnia.
The agency said it hoped to promote a more cautious approach to the use of herbal medicines after a study found that 58% of respondents believed these products were safe because they are "natural". In fact, herbal remedies can have harmful side-effects. St John's Wort can stop the contraceptive pill working, while ginkgo and ginseng are known to interfere with the blood-thinning drug warfarin. And in February the MHRA issued a warning about the herbal weight loss product Herbal Flos Lonicerae (Herbal Xenicol) Natural Weight Loss Formula, after tests showed it contained more than twice the prescribed dose of a banned substance.
To date, the industry has been covered by the 1968 Medicines Act, drawn up when only a handful of herbal remedies were available and the number of herbal practitioners was very small.
From now, manufacturers will have to prove their products have been made to strict standards and contain a consistent and clearly marked dose. Remedies already on sale will be allowed to stay on the shelves until their expiry date. The agency said there had been 211 applications for approval of herbal remedies so far, with 105 granted and the rest still under consideration. Approved remedies will come with a logo marked THR.

Testing Cleaning Products
Some of you have known for years, others are just now becoming aware of the increasing numbers of allergies to environmental chemicals, artificial fragrances, artificial colorant, genetically modified foods, etc. The on-line Merriam-webster defines artificial as humanly contrived, often after a natural model. The key seems to be artificial, though sometimes the boundaries are blurred. As I have gotten older, I find that I need to be more diligent as to what chemicals I allow myself to be exposed to. In observing our young and when I consider the epidemic rise in allergies in respiratory diseases across the board, I ponder the question of, "When will we as consumers say enough to all of the fake stuff polluting our lives?".
Someone asked Earth Talk® From the Editors of E/The Environmental Magazine about the chemicals in household cleaners. Following is their response.

The government only requires companies to list "chemicals of known concern" on their labels. And the operative word is "known," because the government has no idea whether most of the chemicals used in everyday cleaning products are safe because it doesn't test them, and it doesn't require manufacturers to test them either.
Dear EarthTalk: Why don't cleaning products have to list their ingredients, and are these products tested for what they might do to your health? -- Patricia Greenville, Bethel, CT
Since cleaning products aren't food, beverages or drugs meant to be ingested, they aren't regulated, per se, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. However, makers are required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to list ingredients that are active disinfectants or potentially harmful. Otherwise, they usually keep their other ingredients secret, presumably so competitors can't copy their formulas.
But consumer advocate Sloan Barnett, author of Green Goes with Everything, doesn't give manufacturers the benefit of that doubt. "Call me suspicious, but I honestly don't think it's because the recipe is top secret," she says. "If it was, there wouldn't be so many competing products with identical ingredients." Barnett thinks manufacturers don't want to scare off consumers by disclosing how many potentially harmful chemicals are flying under the EPA's radar in their products.
"The government only requires companies to list 'chemicals of known concern' on their labels. The key word here is 'known'," she says. "The fact is that the government has no idea whether most of the chemicals used in everyday cleaning products are safe because it doesn't test them, and it doesn't require manufacturers to test them either."
She adds that the EPA, under the terms of 1976's Toxic Substances Control Act, "can't require chemical companies to prove the safety of their products unless the agency itself can show that the product poses a health risk-which the EPA does not have the resources to do since, according to one estimate, it receives some two thousand new applications for approval every year." She cites a recent study by the non-profit Environmental Working Group, which found that the EPA approved most applications within three weeks even though more than half provided no information on toxicity whatsoever.
Regardless, consumers should be familiar with what warning labels are on cleaning products. "All household cleaners that contain known hazardous chemicals must carry a warning label that spells out potential risks, along with precautionary steps and first-aid instructions," reports Consumer Reports' Greener Choices website.
Some manufacturers are beginning to be more transparent about their ingredients. The Clorox Company, for example, one of the largest manufacturers of cleaning products, now publishes full lists of the ingredients for all of its brands on its corporate responsibility website, CloroxCSR.com. Many praise Clorox for doing so; others argue that, whether or not ingredients are disclosed, the company-like many others-is still in the business of making products that pose health and environmental hazards.
Generally speaking, if you're looking for safer alternatives, browse the cleaning products sections of natural foods markets such as Whole Foods, which are populated with lesser-known but more green-friendly brands. For do-it-yourselfers, the Greener Choices website also lists recipes for eco- and health-friendly homemade household cleaners using ingredients like baking soda, borax, lemon juice and vinegar.

CLIMATE ACTION TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING
Ten Strikes Against Nuclear Power
Here at Green America, we’re working hard to heal the climate by transitioning our electricity mix away from its heavy emphasis on coal-fired power. But all of that work will be wasted if we transition from coal into an equally dangerous source – nuclear power, which is why we've put together this list of reasons why nuclear power is not a climate solution.
Solar power, wind power, geothermal power, hybrid and electric cars, and aggressive energy efficiency are climate solutions that are safer, cheaper, faster, more secure, and less wasteful than nuclear power. Our country needs a massive influx of investment in these solutions if we are to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.
Thankfully, no new nuclear plants have been built in the US for over 30 years. That means that a whole new generation of concerned citizens grew up without knowing the facts about nuclear power – or remembering the terrible disasters at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. So it is time to remind everyone that nuclear is not the answer. Please help us get the word out.
Currently we draw electric power from about 400 nuclear plants worldwide. Nuclear proponents say we would have to scale up to around 17,000 nuclear plants to offset enough fossil fuels to begin making a dent in climate change. This isn’t possible – neither are 2,500 or 3,000 more nuclear plants that many people frightened about climate change suggest. Here’s why:
________________________________________
1. Nuclear waste -- The waste from nuclear power plants will be toxic for humans for more than 100,000 years. It’s untenable now to secure and store all of the waste from the plants that exist. To scale up to 2,500 or 3,000, let alone 17,000 plants is unthinkable.
Nuclear proponents hope that the next generation of nuclear plants will generate much less waste, but this technology is not yet fully developed or proven. Even if new technology eventually can successful reduce the waste involved, the waste that remains will still be toxic for 100,000 years. There will be less per plant, perhaps, but likely more overall, should nuclear power scale up to 2,500, 3,000 or 17,000 plants. No community should have to accept nuclear waste site, or even accept the risks of nuclear waste being transported through on route to its final destination. The waste problem alone should take nuclear power off the table.
The proposed solution a national nuclear waste storage facility at Yucca Mountain is overbudget and won’t provide a safe solution either. The people of Nevada don’t want that nuclear waste facility there. Also, we would need to transfer the waste to this facility from plants around the country and drive it there – which puts communities across the country at risk.
2. Nuclear proliferation – In discussing the nuclear proliferation issue, Al Gore said, “During my 8 years in the White House, every nuclear weapons proliferation issue we dealt with was connected to a nuclear reactor program.” Iran and North Korea are reminding us of this every day. We can’t develop a domestic nuclear energy program without confronting proliferation in other countries.
Here too, nuclear power proponents hope that the reduction of nuclear waste will reduce the risk of proliferation from any given plant, but again, the technology is not there yet. If we want to be serious about stopping proliferation in the rest of the world, we need to get serious here at home, and not push the next generation of nuclear proliferation forward as an answer to climate change. There is simply no way to guarantee that nuclear materials will not fall into the wrong hands
3. National Security – Nuclear reactors represent a clear national security risk, and an attractive target for terrorists. In researching the security around nuclear power plants, Robert Kennedy, Jr. found that there are at least eight relatively easy ways to cause a major meltdown at a nuclear power plant.
What’s more, Kennedy has sailed boats right into the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant on the Hudson River outside of New York City not just once but twice, to point out the lack of security around nuclear plants. The unfortunate fact is that our nuclear power plants remain unsecured, without adequate evacuation plans in the case of an emergency. Remember the government response to Hurricane Katrina, and cross that with a Chernobyl-style disaster to begin to imagine what a terrorist attack at a nuclear power plant might be like.
4. Accidents – Forget terrorism for a moment, and remember that mere accidents – human error or natural disasters – can wreak just as much havoc at a nuclear power plant site. The Chernobyl disaster forced the evacuation and resettlement of nearly 400,000 people, with thousands poisoned by radiation.
Here in the US, the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island in 1979 triggered a clean-up effort that ultimately lasted for nearly 15 years, and topped more than one billion dollars in cost. The cost of cleaning up after one of these disasters is simply too great, in both dollars and human cost – and if we were to scale up to 17,000 plants, is it reasonable to imagine that not one of them would ever have a single meltdown? Many nuclear plants are located close to major population centers. For example, there’s a plant just up the Hudson from New York City. If there was an accident, evacuation would be impossible.
5. Cancer -- There are growing concerns that living near nuclear plants increases the risk for childhood leukemia and other forms of cancer – even when a plant has an accident-free track record. One Texas study found increased cancer rates in north central Texas since the Comanche Peak nuclear power plant was established in 1990, and a recent German study found childhood leukemia clusters near several nuclear power sites in Europe.
According to Dr. Helen Caldicott, a nuclear energy expert, nuclear power plants produce numerous dangerous, carcinogenic elements. Among them are: iodine 131, which bio-concentrates in leafy vegetables and milk and can induce thyroid cancer; strontium 90, which bio-concentrates in milk and bone, and can induce breast cancer, bone cancer, and leukemia; cesium 137, which bio-concentrates in meat, and can induce a malignant muscle cancer called a sarcoma; and plutonium 239. Plutonium 239 is so dangerous that one-millionth of a gram is carcinogenic, and can cause liver cancer, bone cancer, lung cancer, testicular cancer, and birth defects. Because safe and healthy power sources like solar and wind exist now, we don’t have to rely on risky nuclear power.
6. Not enough sites – Scaling up to 17,000 – or 2,500 or 3,000 -- nuclear plants isn’t possible simply due to the limitation of feasible sites. Nuclear plants need to be located near a source of water for cooling, and there aren’t enough locations in the world that are safe from droughts, flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, or other potential disasters that could trigger a nuclear accident. Over 24 nuclear plants are at risk of needing to be shut down this year because of the drought in the Southeast. No water, no nuclear power.
There are many communities around the country that simply won’t allow a new nuclear plant to be built – further limiting potential sites. And there are whole areas of the world that are unsafe because of political instability and the high risk of proliferation. In short, geography, local politics, political instability and climate change itself, there are not enough sites for a scaled up nuclear power strategy.
Remember that climate change is causing stronger storms and coastal flooding, which in turn reduces the number of feasible sites for nuclear power plants. Furthermore, due to all of the other strikes against nuclear power, many communities will actively fight against nuclear plants coming into their town. How could we get enough communities on board to accept the grave risks of nuclear power, if we need to build 17, let alone, 17,000 new plants?
7. Not enough uranium – Even if we could find enough feasible sites for a new generation of nuclear plants, we’re running out of the uranium necessary to power them. Scientists in both the US and UK have shown that if the current level of nuclear power were expanded to provide all the world's electricity, our uranium would be depleted in less than ten years.
As uranium supplies dwindle, nuclear plants will actually begin to use up more energy to mine and mill the uranium than can be recovered through the nuclear reactor process. What’s more, dwindling supplies will trigger the use of ever lower grades of uranium, which produce ever more climate-change-producing emissions – resulting in a climate-change catch 22.
8. Costs – Some types of energy production, such as solar power, experience decreasing costs to scale. Like computers and cell phones, when you make more solar panels, costs come down. Nuclear power, however, will experience increasing costs to scale. Due to dwindling sites and uranium resources, each successive new nuclear power plant will only see its costs rise, with taxpayers and consumers ultimately paying the price.
What’s worse, nuclear power is centralized power. A nuclear power plant brings few jobs to its local economy. In contrast, accelerating solar and energy efficiency solutions creates jobs good-paying, green collar, jobs in every community.
Around the world, nuclear plants are seeing major cost overruns. For example, a new generation nuclear plant in Finland is already experiencing numerous problems and cost overruns of 25 percent of its $4 billion budget. The US government’s current energy policy providing more than $11 billion in subsidies to the nuclear energy could be much better spent providing safe and clean energy that would give a boost to local communities, like solar and wind power do. Subsidizing costly nuclear power plants directs that money to large, centralized facilities, built by a few large companies that will take the profits out of the communities they build in.
9. Private sector unwilling to finance – Due to all of the above, the private sector has largely chosen to take a pass on the financial risks of nuclear power, which is what led the industry to seek taxpayer loan guarantees from Congress in the first place
As the Nuclear Energy Institute recently reported in a brief to the US Department of Energy, “100 percent loan coverage [by taxpayers] is essential … because the capital markets are unwilling, now and for the foreseeable future, to provide the financing necessary” for new nuclear power plants. Wall Street refuses to invest in nuclear power because the plants are assumed to have a 50 percent default rate. The only way that Wall Street will put their money behind these plants is if American taxpayers underwrite the risks. If the private sector has deemed nuclear power too risky, it makes no sense to force taxpayers to bear the burden.
And finally, even if all of the above strikes against nuclear power didn’t exist, nuclear power still can’t be a climate solution because there is …
10. No time – Even if nuclear waste, proliferation, national security, accidents, cancer and other dangers of uranium mining and transport, lack of sites, increasing costs, and a private sector unwilling to insure and finance the projects weren’t enough to put an end to the debate of nuclear power as a solution for climate change, the final nail in nuclear’s coffin is time. We have the next ten years to mount a global effort against climate change. It simply isn’t possible to build 17,000 – or 2,500 or 17 for that matter – in ten years.
With so many strikes against nuclear power, it should be off the table as a climate solution, and we need to turn our energies toward the technologies and strategies that can truly make a difference: solar power, wind power, and energy conservation.

Indiana Seeks to Amend Constitution to Ban Gay Marriage and Attack on Women's Reproductive Health
Dear Reader,
I am more interested in people loving people in healthy relationships whether they be men and women, man and man or woman and woman and putting our collective resources into practices and legislation that will support the health and well being of all of our citizens. The reality is that families come in a variety of forms and in the interest of healthy families which makes for healthy communities, all families need to b equally respected. If any marriage is threatened, then the couple within that marriage needs to look within their own marriage for the root of their problems, not outside at others relationships. PCC

Critics of amendment banning gay marriage to rally
Anonymous Associated Press Mon Mar 14, 2011, 09:54 AM EDT
INDIANAPOLIS — Opponents of a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions plan to rally at the Indiana Statehouse.
The "Equality for All Hoosiers" rally Monday comes two days before a Senate committee meeting that will take up the issue. The Republican-controlled House already has approved the proposal, and the Republican-led Senate also is expected to pass it.
Supporters of the amendment say it would provide an additional layer of protection for traditional marriage in case courts later overturn Indiana's current law banning same-sex marriage. Critics say the amendment is unnecessary and would write discrimination into Indiana's constitution.
If the General Assembly approves the proposal this year, it would have to pass again in 2013 or 2014 to be on the ballot in 2014.
ATTACK ON WOMENS HEALTH IN INDIANA!
Womens health is under attack in Indiana and House Bill 1210 is one example of legislation that I think undermines the health and well being of women. If this bill becomes law, it would actually require doctors to lie to pregnant women and tell them that getting an abortion increases their risk of breast cancer -- even though science says is doesn't »
This bill bans abortion after 20 weeks. It would force a woman to have an ultrasound unless she submits a written refusal. Plus, it defunds groups like Planned Parenthood a much needed community resource supporting women’s and girl’s health as the numbers of those slipping into poverty rise. Further language of this bill would scare some women into believing the lie that terminating a pregnancy means they could get breast cancer. The whole abortion/breast cancer theory is controversial and the studies that made the connection are widely considered flawed.
It is unfortunate that politicians are inserting their personal ideologies between the welfare of women and the truthful support of her health practitioner. In a time when we need all of our citizens to be healthy, I think it a grave error for Indiana or any lawmakers to mandate the spread of misinformation and fear tactics that would have the result of miss-educating and reducing the quality of health care to women.
Thank you for reading this, and I hope that you will take the time to read further and educate your self and tell your lawmakers to oppose House Bill 1210 and other attack on women's health »

Save Health Care for Veterans!
Greetings to You,
May you be well in these times of great changes.
Please take time to read and I hope act on behalf of America's Veterans!
Tomorrow is Veterans Day and resources for health and wellness are being considered for cuts, including funds necessary to support the health and recovery of our military veterans and families. 59% of the current budget is slated to support fear and the belief that somehow, if enough money is thrown at fear instead of at what we say we love, that we will somehow come out on top. To all of our service people, I am sorry for the waste of your precious well being.
America's military men and women were willing to sacrifice their lives to serve their country. They should not have to worry about their families' health care. But that's exactly what's happening because of Congressional dithering.
Protect access to care for veterans and military families.
Their health care program, TriCare, is connected to Medicare. And planned cuts to Medicare physician reimbursement will make it difficult for veterans to find the necessary care they require.
Some doctors have said the cuts will force them to decrease or stop seeing new Medicare and TriCare patients. Which means older people and military families may be forced to go to emergency rooms instead of doctor offices for basic care.
Congress has put off fixing Medicare and TriCare nine times -- tell Congress to stop stalling and fix Medicare and Tricare for seniors and military families. »
America's veterans deserve more.
Thanks for taking action!

Urgent! Incinerators comment, other news.
May our hearts be big enough to hold our memories.
URGENT!!! RESPOND TO EPA’s “CALL FOR INFORMATION” ON BIOMASS EMISSIONS! TELL EPA TO REGULATE BIOMASS INCINERATORS JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER SOURCE OF GREENHOUSE GASES! NO SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR BIOMASS!
SEND YOUR COMMENTS TO US EPA BY MIDNIGHT MONDAY, SEPT. 13, 2010 – Help us flood EPA with our voices – the industry is pulling out all stops and we need to be heard, too!
US EPA is trying to do the right thing to protect our health and the planet by making new Clean Air Act rules that regulate greenhouse gases from industry smokestacks such as those of biomass and garbage incinerators. As usual, the biomass and garbage incinerator industry is fighting the rules, saying they should be exempt because their CO2 emissions are “carbon neutral.” We know that’s a lie!
EPA is seeking input from us – the anti-biomass, environmental justice, forest protection, public health, and anti-incinerator community - on whether greenhouse gas emissions (primarily CO2) from these incinerators should be subject to the new rule! OF COURSE THEY SHOULD BE – no exceptions!
Here’s the EPA link to the Call for Information:
http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/emissions/biogenic_emissions.html
The EPA rule is called the “Greenhouse Gas Tailoring Rule” because EPA is setting a threshold (emissions of 25,000 tons per year of greenhouse gases) at which an industry becomes subject to the rule. The typical 50 megawatt biomass incinerator emits about 500,000 tons per year of CO2, so they fall over the threshold and should be subject to the law. Industry says because their CO2 emissions are “biogenic” and part of the “carbon cycle” they don’t cause climate change now and should be subject to the “Tailoring Rule! BUNK!
Please write your personal message to tell EPA that you want biomass incinerator greenhouse gas emissions to be regulated! Here’s how:
1. ONE EASY STEP: Send a short email to GHGBiogenic@epa.gov saying something like “Emissions from biomass power plants should be covered by the tailoring rule. Burning biomass for electricity is not “carbon neutral.”
You can attach a document (say, a letter you wrote already, a report, etc.) No need to reinvent the wheel!
Include your name, address, and email and/or phone contact.
You can also send a letter by fax or snail mail – the addresses are at the end of this email.
2. More in depth comment letter. You can write something more specifically targeted one or more of the questions EPA is seeking information on. The questions are in the link:
http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/emissions/biogenic_emissions.html
EPA issued a correction to the questions on August 2, 2010. (Copied at bullet 5, below)
Here are some suggested talking points and resources:
** The federal Clean Air Act does not provide any legal basis for EPA to exempt biomass incinerator emission - the U.S. Supreme Court told EPA it must regulate greenhouse gases and biomass CO2 is no different!
**Fact sheets and important documents on biomass greenhouse gas and forest impacts are at:
http://www.saveamericasforests.org/Forests%20-%20Incinerators%20-%20Biomass/index.html
** The Environmental Working Group report Clearcut Disaster: Carbon Loophole Threatens U.S. Forests says “Because wood and other biomass materials have a very low energy density, and because biomass power plants are significantly less efficient than gas or even coal plants, carbon dioxide emissions from biomass per unit of energy generated are about 1.5 times higher than from coal and three to four times higher than from natural gas.”
** Harvesting forests for electricity means those forests no longer serve as carbon “sinks” (sequestering carbon out of the atmosphere), which adds further to the impact of biomass on atmospheric CO2.
**An article in Science magazine by Searchinger et al. 2009 says: “However, harvesting existing forests for electricity adds net carbon to the air. That remains true even if limited harvest rates leave the carbon stocks of regrowing forests unchanged, because the stocks would otherwise increase and contribute to the terrestrial carbon sink.”
** Healthy plant growth depends upon healthy soils with adequate nutrients. Harvesting biomass not only results in CO2 emissions from soils as they are compacted and disturbed, but also depletes nutrients when plant material is removed and burned instead of being allowed to decompose and recycle and regenerate soils.
**The time scale for “re-sequestering” of carbon depends on how long forests take to regrow. When old growth forest is cut, it may take hundreds or thousands of years to regain it’s carbon stocks. Even fast rotation industrial monocultures require at least 15-30 years to regrow. This is time we cannot afford. Besides, when soils are compacted and disturbed by harvesting, they emit yet more CO2 and may no longer support regrowth. Synthetic fertilizers will be required, further contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. And there are yet more emissions from transportation. All of those would need to be resequestered to attain “carbon neutrality”.
**Pretending that it is carbon neutral and switching from fossil fuels to biomass will therefore greatly increase rather than decrease CO2 emissions over the coming decades and also reduce the capacity of carbon sinks.
**The distinction between “biological” and fossil carbon is no longer clear: So much carbon has already been taken from underground fossil stores and added to above ground “carbon pools” that ecosystems are saturated and unable to resequester or cycle it all, already. It is critically important that we cut down on fossil fuel emissions, but further compromising our stressed ecosystems by harvesting massive amounts of biomass and burning it will only make matters worse
** As long as EPA fails to regulate CO2 emissions from biogenic sources, we will continue to see biomass burning subsidized as the easiest and least expensive option for “renewable energy”, and especially so because it can be relied upon for consistent “baseload” electricity. An article published in Science points out that with the carbon neutral myth in place, combined with incentives to “reduce emissions”, we may see virtually all remaining native forests, grasslands, savannah and other ecosystems converted to industrial monocultures for energy crops. This is simply not acceptable. Biomass can no longer be subsidized under the false premise that it is “carbon neutral”.

4. EPA August 2, 2010 correction to call for information from 75 Federal Register 45112
In the published
document, the text of the first bulleted
item in Section I.D (beginning on page
41175, third column) was incorrect. The
correct text for that item is as follows:
• Biomass under PSD/BACT. What criteria
might be used to consider biomass fuels and
the emissions resulting from their
combustion differently with regard to
applicability under PSD and with regard to
the Best Available Control Technology
(BACT) review process under PSD?
In addition, the first full sentence of
the third bulleted item in Section I.D
(first column, page 41176) contained a
typographical error. The correct text for
that sentence is: ‘‘The Clean Air Act
(CAA) provisions typically apply at the
unit, process, or facility scale, whereas
the IPCC Guidance on accounting for
GHG emissions from bioenergy sources
was written to be applicable at the
national scale.’’

The Arts Alliance of Bloomington
The Arts Alliance of Bloomington group has been formed as a group for artists; "...a facilitating and communications agency that ideally will connect artists and groups of artists (or “guilds”) with one another and, through a steering committee and a smaller coordinating committee, flow that connection on to those entities, such as local government, IU, the Chamber of Commerce, Ivy Tech and others that may have resources or can otherwise help materially achieve whatever goals are identified."
Why do I post this to the Indiana Holistic Health Network Blog? I offer this information here because I believe that the arts are among the major ingredients to healthy people and communities. Lots of research data exist about the benefits arts offer in support of mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. I have also been a working artist for my entire adult life; and I personally know the valuable role arts have played within my own life, to the art viewing public and to the hundreds, maybe thousands of students, I have had the joy of sharing my artist skills with.
If you are an artist working the Bloomington, Indiana area and would like to connect with the AAB join the group here - http://groups.google.com/group/bloomington-arts/
Blessings of health and art!
